There are specific Basic Requirements which you must satisfy if you are to be eligible for General Skilled Migration to Australia.
These Basic Requirements generally relate to an applicant's:
The General Skilled Migration program is for people who are not sponsored by an employer and who have skills in particular occupations that Australia needs. Applicants must be over 18 and under 45 years of age, possess good English language ability and recent skilled work experience or a recently completed eligible Australian qualification.
Applicants must also have the relevant skills and qualifications for an occupation listed on Australia's Skilled Occupation List.
Independent visa categories have the least amount of restrictions placed upon them and is the preferred option for eligible applicants who do not have an employer to sponsor them.
When the basic requirements of the visa are satisfied, the Skilled Visa Points Test will further determine and decide the eligibility for General Skilled Migration.
Within the Skilled Visa Program, adjustments to the pass mark within the points-tested visas may occur from time to time. Recent adjustments have been to increase pass marks, thus making it harder for applicant’s to meet the requirements.
When an applicant does not score enough points to qualify under a particular visa subclass, their application can be placed into a pool that will be considered if the point requirements are lowered in the future.
Eligibility criteria
Age:
30 points - 18 to 29 years old
25 points - 30 to 34 years old
20 points - 35 to 39 years old
15 points - 40 to 44 years old
English:
25 points - Proficient English
15 points - Competent English
15 points - Concessional Competent English
15 points - Vocational English
Those applicants who have proficient English (minimum score of 7.0 in each component of IELTS), will be awarded 25 points. All applicants who wish to claim maximum points for English, will need to provide evidence that they have sat for an English language test. There are no exemptions for specified passport holders.
Nominated Occupation:
60 points - Training specific occupation where you are required to have a qualification (trade or degree) and relevant working experience.
50 points - General professional occupation where you must possess a qualification comparable to an Australian bachelor degree.
40 points - Other general skilled occupations where you must possess a qualification equivalent to an Australian diploma or advanced diploma.
Specific Work Experience:
10 points - If your occupation is worth 60 points AND you are employed in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation for at least 3 out of the last 4 years.
5 points - If your nominated occupation is worth 40, 50 or 60 points and you have been employed for at least 3 out of the last 4 years.
Australian Work Experience:
10 points - If you are employed in Australia in your nominated occupation, or a closely related skilled occupation for at least 12 months in the last 48 months or completed a recognized professional year in Australia for at least 12 months in the last 48 months prior to your visa application.
Australian Qualifications:
25 points - Completed a doctorate degree in the English medium in Australia for at least 2 years.
15 points - Completed an Australian Masters or Honours Degree (at least upper second class level) after 2 academic years of study following completion of an Australian bachelor's degree as a result of at least 1 year study in Australia.
5 points - Met the 2 year onshore study requirement.
Occupation In Demand:
20 points - Nominated occupation is on MODL have a full time employment offer in Australia and worked in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation for at least 1 year in the last 4 years.
15 points - Nominated occupation is on MODL and you have been employed in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation for at least 1 year in the last 4 years.
Community Language:
You are awarded 5 points if you are fluent in one of Australia’s community language as evidenced through your qualification papers by the university or accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
Regional Australia Study:
You are awarded 5 points if you met the 2 year study requirement whilst living and studying in a regional area of Australia.
Spouse Skills:
You are awarded 5 points if your spouse or interdependent partner is able to satisfy the basic requirement for age, English, work experience, qualification, nominated occupation and obtained a suitable skill assessment from the relevant skill assessing authority.
Skilled - Independent (subclass 175)
The offshore Skilled Independent visa is based on a points test system, with a pass mark of 120 points. Successful visa applicants can live and work in any part of Australia and take up any employment if granted the Skilled Independent visa.
Skilled - Sponsored (subclass 176)
The offshore Skilled Sponsored visa is a permanent visa for people who are unable to meet the Skilled Independent pass mark. Applicants must be sponsored by an Australian relative or an Australian state/territory government and meet the pass mark of 100 for the visa.
Skilled - Regional Sponsored (subclass 475)
This is a three year provisional visa for people who can meet the lower pass mark of 100. Applicants must be either sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia or nominated by a participating state/territory government. After residing for two years and working for at least one year in a Specified Regional Area, applicants can then apply for a rollover to the permanent visa.
Skilled - Recognised Graduate (subclass 476)
This is an 18 month temporary visa for graduates of recognised overseas educational institutions who have skills in demand in Australia. Recognised Graduate (subclass 476) visa holders have unrestricted work and study rights and can apply for a permanent GSM or employer sponsored visa at any time.
