Rupert Murdoch: Australia Needs To Increase Immigration

Rupert Murdoch, one of the wealthiest businessmen in Australia said during a lecture in Sydney that Australia needs to attract more immigrants to become more competitive and create strong bonds with other nations especially in Asia.

“The more people we have with ties to other parts of the world, the greater our advantage when we seek trade relationships with these nations. Immigration adds its own dynamism to any economy.”

Mr. Murdoch, 82, a media mogul and chairman of News Corp added that newcomers in Australia must abide by Australian values institutions, and way of life. The speech was delivered at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, a provider of research on foreign policy.

“Australia is on the way to becoming what may be the world’s most diverse nation. This is an incredible competitive advantage.”

“A nation as small as ours will increasingly depend on trade. And the more people we have with ties to other parts of the world, the greater our advantage when we seek trade relationships with these nations.”

Mr. Murdoch also compared Australia with the United States in terms of immigration policy and said the United States remains the country’s number one alliance.

“We think of the United States as an immigrant nation, and rightly so. But the percentage of foreign-born in the United States, a country currently racked by a self-defeating debate over immigration policy, is just about 12%. Incredibly, Australia is double that.”

In his speech relating to Australia’s ties with other countries, he mentioned that Indonesia is “assured right” as one of Australia’s most important partner and continue a “friendly” relationship with China.
